Shiva -- Advancing the programmability and security of the Linux userland runtime.

This talk we will be discussing a technology that I call Shiva. It is an
innovative approach to expanding the programmability and security of the Linux
userland runtime. Shiva is a sophisticated program that functions as a custom
"program interpreter" for loading and executing modules into the process
address space at runtime. Think "LKM's for userland".

This talk will focus primarily on the use of Shiva for the design and
integration of security modules which harden programs against exploitation at
runtime. We will explore the Shiva API, and demonstrate it's capabilities with
several modules that mitigate exploitation attacks, and a module which
implements a process sandbox to harden against general attempts at privilege
escalation. Shiva allows the programmer to have full command over the process
address space, with a flexible and innovative API that allows developers to
rapidly design new security technologies and mitigation features without the
need for compile-time instrumentation.

Moreover, we will cover the fascinating internals of the Shiva runtime
environment, and see how it can also be used as a standalone tracing engine to
accomplish complex debugging and instrumentation tasks, such as function
tracing, software profiling, and reverse engineering hardened binaries.

Extra Better Program Finagling (eBPF) for Attack and Defense

Program instrumentation and tracing is a key component of any offensive persistence framework or defensive endpoint detection and response (EDR) technology. Desktop and Server platforms have included various tracing tools and APIs over the years from strace and truss to DTrace and SystemTap. This talk will focus on the latest tracing infrastructure known as Extended Berkeley Packet Filters (eBPF) which is currently supported on Linux and is coming to Windows as well.

eBPF has the ability to trace arbitrary kernel and userland binaries and includes a program verifier for the attached hook functions implemented by the user. As the tracing technologies are merging into a unified API layer, we see adoption happening for both the offensive and defensive tooling. eBPF is complex with several front end languages and backend hooking engines. This talk will explain how eBPF works, what it takes to write eBPF based hooks, and demonstrate two simple tools for verfiying or infecting ELF binaries on the fly.

Some of the topics we will cover:
- What workflows allow rapid development of eBPF programs
- How to use eBPF to verify privileged processes and build your own telemetry
- How to use eBPF to stealthily infect ELF binaries from kernel
- Why you should never load eBPF with Python w/ demo against real EDR
- The future of eBPF

${talk.name}: An Introduction to Template Injection

Software is always changing, and new technology means new bugs. Modern web frameworks and technologies may be more resistant to classic bugs such as XSS and command injection, but templating engines open a new world of attack surface. Template injection bugs are often overlooked, but often lead to very serious vulnerabilities that are simple to exploit. In this talk, I'll map out the landscape of templating engines, explain why template injection bugs occur, and talk about how they can be identified and exploited.

~Rapid~ Reckless Prototyping PCBs with KiCAD and Othermill

The normal PCB design process is to first design the circuit schematic, then lay the parts out on a board, then wait for them to be fabricated. There are plenty of quick-turn pcb sources, but we're still talking days or weeks before finding out what new mistakes you might have made.

Just like how digital photography allows you to learn to take better photos by tightening the feedback loop between taking a photo and seeing the result, access to a PCB mill can let you learn from weeks of mistakes in under an hour.

Bring a laptop with KiCAD 6 installed. We'll provide a simple schematic for you to start with so we can focus on the board layout and milling part of the project. We'll have a few PCB mills available, plus components for you to solder your creation together once you're done.

Note: if you're an experienced PCB designer, you're welcome to attend and learn to use the mills - but during the workshops the mills will be set up for milling simple, large-pitch, single-sided designs rapidly. There may be an opportunity after the workshop to try milling more advanced (and time consuming) designs.

The bean-to-bar industry in the US has grown substantially in the past ten years as consumers become interested in buying bean-to-bar chocolate that costs much more than your average candy bar. During the talk, we will also taste several chocolates from local bean-to-bar makers.

3 min - Background on Microsoft Authenticode - why it's there, how it works, peculiarities and limitations. Previous research of making undetectable changes.
2 min - My discovery - attaching new self-signed signatures does not invalidate the existing signatures, keeps Microsoft happy.
2 min - How to pack new custom signatures chock-full of your data
1 min - How to have your code extract that data from the new signatures at run-time.
5 min - Demo - walk through a specific use case: An installer exe is injected with unique registration keys generated per each installation. It uses this technique to self-register at install time without requiring any user interactions or triggering Windows alerts.
5 min - Limitations. Ideas for other uses (signed execs as data mules, code exec from inside custom signatures)

Are you one of those people who has troubles doing something for two minutes and then at other times dives so deep you forget to do things like sleep or eat? While everyone else has one or two solutions to a problem do you have two dozen? Do you find that coffee calms you? Were your school report cards filled with statements like "doesn't try hard enough"?...

The hacking community is one of those great places for ADHD minds. Reverse engineering, making new things and solving problems are horribly engaging which is great for us. This talk will be a celebration of all the horrible ways ADHD messes with us along with a few good tips and information on the subject.

Build Your Own Blue Box!

A blue box is a device that produces special signalling tones that were used within the long-distance telephone network. Used by famous phreaks such as Evan Doorbell, Ben Decibel, Steve Wozniak and Mark Bernay, the multi-frequency tones generated by blue boxes and red boxes could be used to route telephone calls, host chat lines, or fool a payphone into thinking coins have been deposited.

Come and build a blue box with our engineering experts, and learn how to use it from an experienced phone phreak!

While you probably can't use the bluebox on the _real_ phone network anymore (and we would _never_ condone such action!) you just might be able to use it on the Shadytel network...

Weather Balloon Launch

In coordination with the Great Plains Super Launch https://www.superlaunch.org/ we are launching a mid altitude weather balloon with a ham radio tracking device (APRS) in to the jetstream and racing it around the world. If you want to see it in real time the callsign will be K7HAK-12 for those of you that want to track it and see telemetry data via radio or on aprs.fi or tracker.habhub.org.
My goal is to have it find neutral buoyancy at the same altitude as the middle of the jetstream, the tracker is a qrp-labs lite APRS module that will be powered during the sunlight with a small solar panel and a couple super capacitors. It will be hauled by a sbs-13 super pressure balloon, I'm bringing everything unassembled and unprogrammed so if its anything that interests you if you hit me up and we can get this thrown together. Will need to construct the 2 meter antenna, solder the components on it, waterproof it somewhat and test it out preflight.

In the workshop you’ll solve a series of challenges, each in a contained virtualized network where it’s just you and your targets. We’ll start with a networking crash course to introduce you to packets and their layers, as well as how to use Wireshark to dig in and explore further. We'll practice network sniffing and scanning to find your targets, and of course how to execute a man-in-the-middle attack via ARP spoofing to intercept local network traffic. With those techniques, we'll go through challenges including extracting plaintext passwords, and DNS poisoning. All together, this workshop aims to give you the tools you need to start attacking systems at the network layer.
